James, Yes, it seems that the law is going after trucks with modified exhaust systems using Jakes. If you use the factory exhaust with a jake, you're fine. The 6-7 inch and bigger pipes is soon to be illegal, as well as straight pipes. The saying "Loud pipes save lives" is about to die off. I like straight pipes and a Jake.

What's goin' on...
I know a driver that used his jakes w/in the city limits where a no jakes sign was posted outside town. He went to court and won because (Long story short) federal law claims that any possible means the truck has to slow/stop it can be used that the truck was equipped w/. Federal law superceeded the laws of that city so he got out of the ticket. He told me flat out the judge told him never to return to that city again.

Illinois has the same law. I don't think it's fair that you can't use an jake brake with modified exhaust, when some of the motorcycles around here are so loud you can hear then 3 miles away. I have never heard of police doing anything about that. Some of them are so loud you can go deaf just by sitting next to them. Oh well, that's my little rant.

here in australia, well the state of tasmania anyway, use of a jake, dynotard or any other noisy engine brake is discouraged in built up areas or in hospital zones, one hospital in particular is situated in an 80 zone with a large oundabout outside the hospital and theres a slight decent down into the roundabout, the signs here meerly state "AVOID" using engine brake.not DONT,a few guys have been picked up on it with the ticket of "undue noise" which carries a fine of $110 and 3 demiit points on your licence, however a couple of these fellas have taken this to court stated their case explaining that the "jake" is a SAFETY feature on a truck and will be used when needed and as the signs say "avoid" using engine brakes and being professional drivers used it when needed and won the cases, the euro "exhaust" bakes the tollerate a bit more as they are mostly quieter but lets face it you may as well hang a hanky out the window to slow you down for all the good some of them are,

I agree that the Detroit Jake is pretty cool but the loudest i have ever heard is a straight piped N-14 celect.

I haul around a 12 ton 45ft trailer on the back of my scania and engine brakes are needed all the time. I try not to use them on the early starts if I can get way with it.
