Well, I am probably the last person to enter this discussion. I haven´t built too many models and don´t go chasing the contests and I probably never will. But I very much like what you say, muleskinner. Though I never met any rivet counter personally, we have them in my country too. But some excellent and experienced model builders too. Like you said, there ain´t two of us seeing things the same way. And it´s funny how hot quarrel or dispute is raised sometimes over such a piecefull and relaxing field as model building is. I tried to imagine how your builds would look like without any weathering. Still perfect models but the spirit would all be gone. Still hell of a building job behind but no story to tell. Like white collar dressed in work clothes on occassion. I appreciate your way of seeing things and the way you capture the things to make such unusual builds. I also like the history bits attached to them.

Like white collar dressed in work clothes on occassion. I appreciate your way of seeing things and the way you capture the things to make such unusual builds. I also like the history bits attached to them. Jarda You know Jarda, I often find a piece of worn out discarded machinery and ask myself the same thing, what did it look like when it came out of the factory and what changes it went through during its lifetime on the job. When I see a black and white photo of an old time piece of logging equipment I sometimes make a sketch of it and try to get and idea of the original color by trying different color phases of green, black and grays, which most equipment of the olden days were painted, before the colorful paint jobs of today. In those days bright colorful paint jobs did not bring in the paycheck, it was the machinery and punchers who worked them which did. Before I post a model it is in a new paint job but like you said the history isn't there in seeing it new so the weathering begins, then the wear and tear of years of use begins to show. I can honestly say some of my worst critics in this field of modeling, other than what I've mentioned already are the loggers themselves but what I hear most of the time when they look at one of my builds, is "Boy, now that brings back memories." or, "Now that reminds me of when I worked for So and So on the skyline job years ago!" I have also built a few pieces which get comments like "What the H--- is that supposed to be??" but you learn to live with them. Its like they say" You can please some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time. But this is life.

Muleskinner, I think your outlook is very very cool. I like to build these models of different types but I haven't got into the weathering part. I think the weathering does adds character to a build and it suddenly has a life to tell of. You only have to look and listen to what it is saying. I too muleskinner was brought up in the logging industry in Louisiana. My first job was in pulpwooding with a single axle ole dodge 1 ton converted into a pulpwood truck using a drive axle (some how) as a winch. We used an ole Massey Furguson tractor with a couple a pares of thongs and a draw bar. I have built a log loader as I remember it and a log truck with the sliding tandems. I am thinking of using the wheels and tires and axles from a 1/25 scale big foot model and building a skidder to go with the group. But somehow to me the tires just don't look big enough. But I totally understand what you guys are saying and I also think you guys are "right on" so lets just have fun, the way it is intended. Kerry

Hi,
I am brand new to this forum, I came across it while looking for the forum I joined a few months ago that seems to have disappeared some time in the past 3 weeks. I have not looked around this site very much yet, but I like what I see so far. I am not a trucker, but have been around it most of my life.
The truck model sites I have come across recently, with their minimum postings and minimum builds, and what not, seem to encourage postings by a lot of "back thumpers" - people who post a comment to everybodys postings. This bores me to death! I want to look at models, finished or not, not read a bunch of cheerleader posting. I want to get inspired by the work I see, and learn how to do new things, or find sources for parts and supplies, or be able to get friendly feedback when I have questions. I just don't understand the idea of a forum that has a bunch of restrictive posting or membership rules, regardless of how nice their builds look.
Now, I haven't completed any model kits in probably close to 30 years (!!!), cars or trucks. I mostly enjoy truck kits, and if I was going to start working on something anytime soon, trucks would definitely be it. I collect new kits (cars and trucks) and repop kits when they come out, and I have plenty of old truck kits in the closet. I have several that are in arrested progress / on hold, waiting for me to do something. Mostly, paint. I hate to paint. I never have tried the weathering thing, but I enjoy seeing the heavily weathered builds just as much as I enjoy any fancy paint job. Of course, in 1:1 scale, I like "rat rods" just as much as I like trailer-only show cars, so I may be a little out there for some people! They both have wheels and engines, right? I enjoy trucks the same way. I own my Dad's last truck, a '66 KW ex-hood, which has right at 3.5 million miles on the original odometer. I haven't driven it in 11 years, and it is unrestored - but it has all of its history there for you to see. All the names ever painted on the door are still visible if you look closely. It has had 4 different engines (8V-71, 12V-71, 1693 Cat, 3406B Cat). Frame stretched a foot for the 12V. 2 different suspensions (air, then leaf), 3 different transmissions, (12 speed, married box 4x4, 13 speed), 2 different rear axle types. My Dad engineered all of these changes in dirt parking lots (sometimes in a borrowed garage) over a 30 year period (he bought it when it was about 2 years old form orignal owners). It has the original aluminum front bumper, 36 in bunk, and has never been in any kind of wreck. Anyhow, this old truck ("the Old Buggy") is part rat rod, part retro-mod, part original, part custom. One thing it isn't, is maybe beautiful, but it does have a classic look to it. I guess I like seeing model builds that reflect real 1:1 vehicles, whether stock or modified in any way. So, pretty much everything! My main scale is 1/25, but I also have a small collection of 1/87 stuff. I have a kit in both scales under construction that will document my 66 KW, they are each about halfway done, the 1/25 is 33 years in progress (no rush), and the 1/87 kit is but 15 years old. I get them out periodically to check them out, but so far, no spark to get going. Maybe soon though!
I probably won't post much on this site, but I hope to enjoy seeing the workmanship of the folks who do post pictures and commentary about their kits. Maybe one day I will have something to post myself, it could happen!

We would love to see pics of your KW Jim!!! it sounds like a truck that really epitomizes the American trucker and what he stands for. We are basically of the midest here that if something's not broke, don't try to fix it. As has been said before, we realize not every forum is for every modeler and we understand and accept that. But, for those who do frequent this site, we hope it keeps your attention and keeps you coming back for more. For us, that's the secret to success. Not being able to get enough is what it's all about!

I am guilty as charged,I have been a member for over a year and haven't posted ~BUT~ I do check in daily or so and read and follow what's going on,I had the model building disease many years ago and now it has came back, but slowly,I am a single parent with a wonderful 10yr old daughter who get my attention first so that slows the process of getting back in the swing of things of this hobby.
I look at these forums as a place to meet others and also as a "school" to learn...I too like others belong to a few other forums and learn from those as well and I do/did belong to another truck forum until I got deleted again for the last time because I didn't meet the required guide lines of post/photos and I guess this rule is fine and all but it does tend to make it a boring forum after awhile because members are too worried about meeting the months quota so the post become "nice Build" etc. and also that goes for the posting of pictures to just fill the requirements, but on here it isn't like here and I feel you get more quality of info and pictures other than quantity.........I was deleted again "over there" and as always I renewed my membership but got to thinking......so I deleted my account the next day only because I know it would happen again, its a great forum and not bashing it,I am just not their "type of member" and that's okay.....so with that said "Thank you Truckstop for allowing me to be a member here and I hope to get started again and join the posting"....on oh btw,my daughter wants to start the hobby too....she's a "Bobby Big Rigger" fanatic!!!!!!!

I have not been here for a long time, the reason I have had a lot going on in my personl life and that took main priority over everything else. One thing I do not wan't to see is this forum dissapear it is great to be back here as for a solution may I suggest we work through it. We all have other thing's in life that come first but it is great when you can get back at the bench, and it felt that way when I got back to it for the first time in a long time last night.
Regards Tony

I "lost" this forum through several computer changes, and just was reintroduced to it through a notification that it was shutting down. I feel bad that I wasn't here to support it, and really don't want to see it shut down.

I'll take it over even if it's only to keep the info on here alive. -Scott H.

I would like to see it stay on also. I must say that I haven't been on here a lot but this is a wake up call. I will check in daily if it stays on and post some builds when I get back to building again.
