I am planning on building Italeri's Pete 378 as a long nose 379 but i would rather power it with a Cat. I dont plan on updating the truck to a newer model year so what do you suggest? I wouldn't be against installing the KTA600 engine but i am guessing it's too new for that truck. I assume i would have to update the interior and cab doors with the resin parts to have the truck in the same year range. I have a 3406 out of the Revell 359 but i believe thats a 1/25 scale engine and the Italeri 378 is 1/24 so the engine would look small in it.
I realize this question was posted a while ago, but in case you never found your answer, here it goes. I'm starting the same project of converting the 378 to a 379 and I was looking for different power too. The best choice, in terms of availability, is Auslowe's Cummins Signature 600 which could be found in a 379 from 1999 to about 2001, maybe 2002. (The Series 60 wasn't available in the 379 beyond those dates either.) The Italeri cab dates the truck to a pre-2005 model anyway. After that the vent windows went away and the mirrors changed, along with other things.
If you can find a resin C15, great, and with that engine and the updated resin cab and parts from P&P, then you could even make an accurate 2005-2007 year 379. I gave up trying to find a C15, myself.
The KTA 600 is actually an older model engine form the 70's/80's. The 3406 would only really work if it was a 3406e (the late model 3406 that preceeded the C15) and that is next to impossible to find in resin. So, your best bet is the Series 60 (in the kit) or a Signature 600 if you want to be totally accurate.
