When I built models way back in the day and wanted to add working lights the only choice I had was wheat bulbs. If you look closely at this old photo you can see where I added wheat bulbs for the cab running lights and painted the light amber so they would look correct. 
My question is with all the options today what is the preferred lighting choice? I am considering using LEDs in some places such as headlamps, taillights, and others, but I'm not sure that will work for marker lights or other small lights . For that I'm thinking about fiber optics. Basically I'm just trying to find out what works best for you before I mess things up on my wrecker. Thanks

I've used a mix of LED and Fiber optics for lighting. Most of the "model" LEDs at 3 volt. I found the advantages are lower current draw, long life and NO heat generated. The LEDS come in Clear White light, Blue, Orange/Yellow, Blue and Red. You can used Fiber Optic cable to run from a Colored LED to use for marker lights, dash and CB lighting and such. Stevens International and Robbie also make Scale Marine lights that are 1.5 to 3 volt. Here is the Distributor I use. Miniatronics has colored LEDs down to 1.5 mm. Flashing LEDS and 3mm Headlamp LEDs, Micro Connectors and Low Voltage transformers for model lighting. Also avaliable at select model train shops. There is some really tiny wheat bulbs you can buy that would work for these. They are so tiny and I have used them for dash lights or spotlights, etc. And they come in colored versions.....Check your local hobby shop.....or online...
