Hi all! Here is my first "on the bench- report" since I'm a member on this forum (shame on me!) Please excuse my bad english, but I don't know all technical terms in english. Sorry! I wanna build a frameless dumper, because I think, those dumpers are a fascinating thing! In Europe, this kind of dumper is forbidden (as far as I know), because it's stability whilst tipping is not so pretty! As example, I took a Clement dumper. The sidewalls are made of Styrene 480 x 70 x 2 mm with 0,5 mm panels on the outside: Ok, looks like a picket fence: The upper "rail" and the rear column are made of brass profile for more stability. The lower "rail" and the head column are made of Styrene: The bottom is made from a Italeri Dry Van: The chassis also is an Italeri part. I glued pieces of tube between the leafes and the frame, because the leafes are not very strong. I also removed the plastic axles and made new ones. Outside a Styrene tube with a 6 x 1 mm aluminum tube pressed in. For the axles themself I will take 4 mm brass tube. Will be continoued... Martin

Martin, Like you I find these trailer fascinating. And I can personally attest to their instability when being dumped.I have held many from going over with the boom on an excavator. I like the use of the kits parts and the brass for strength! On the springs you could add another leaf for some added strength. And the metal axles are a great idea, that I need to start doing. Looking forward to your updates on this project.

Hi Marc!
I used an Evergreen tube No. 227 for outer axle. The inner aluminum tube is 5 mm outside, not 6 mm, as I wrote above! Sorry! In past times, I also drove a lot of dumpers. We had one dumper with a length of 13 meters, thats arround 39 ft., like this frameless type. But the trailer had a full frame, air suspension (completely down whilst tipping) and hydraulically stands (posts) for a better stability whilst dumping! But it always was an adventure, to dump it! I didn't liked it. The ground must be completly even! I always had a long spirit level in the truck, to find the right place! One day, a work mate smashed it over - with a two day old , brandnew DAF tractor hooked on! He was a little bit too hurry..... So he was back on the free job market!

Martin Martin, no problem with the measurements. But thanks for correcting it. As for the story of the driver. I have seen and heard many stories like that.No second chance with the cost of equipment these days. We even had one guy, who was trying to impress the bosses. H went around fueling up the machines, And he put diesel in the hydraulic tank on a new Cat loader. ( do not remember the size or number). All he did was help me prove my point about an experienced person to do that job.I made a lot of overtime fueling pumps and equipment . lol Be Well Gator

Martin:
You are doing a great job. I'll be watching your progress. I know what you mean about their stability. I have hauled many loads using them. I was always tense while unloading.

Hello Jeff!
I believe, that you was tense! I think, I would decline to dump it.

Martin, How long will the dump body be? 40 feet seems a bit long??? Just asking cause I've never measured one! lol

Hi Marc!
It's 39 ft. = 50 cm on the model. Most trailers of this kind are available in different length.
I have to shortened the chassis, because it's to long! And by time I'm working on the "tunnel" or "house" for the hydraulic stem.

The hydraulic stem is already finished. I used an radio antenna with a styrene tube for the first segment. I watched a lot of pictures and came to the conclusion, that non of this dumpers tipping higher than 35°. May be, this conclusion is wrong, but I have no "live" example here.... The upper bearing rod of the stem is a T- piece of a cast frame, so no glued point (what will be a weak point) is neccesary. The window for the stem I made much to long and I have to glue in a piece of styrene. I have to replace the Italeri chassis completely, because it will not fit! The wheelbase is different and other details also are not close to the example. On the Grain Hopper, I made, this chassis was perfect, but in this case, it will not work! Martin

The improvisated Chassis. Why improvisated? A detail, I've not seen during preparation for this trailer build is, that the Clement dumpers of this kind have much bigger (diameter) tyres, than a standard tractor tyre! The european standard trailer wheels also will not fit and so I have to use the Italeri standard hubs and tyres I hope, some days I'll find a better solution! Martin

Hi Marc! No, it's not looking good! Im working on a solution to use european trailer wheels for it. Will see...... First try of tipping. The radio-antenna-hydraulic-cylinder holds it up! But only 5 of 6 segments are pulled out: The head board: I made the "service hole" a little bit bigger, to get in it with a small nippers. Head board and service hole will get a small round styrene rod on their borders. Martin

Wheel solution yet found! I took the complete wheels of the Revell Hanomag full trailer- kit. When the mudguards are mounted, the difference between the tyres and the dumper body will optically fit with the pictures of the real trailer, I'd seen on the Clement homepage. Martin

Rear end and Mudguards. The rear end looks different from the example, but I didn't found tail lights, like those very small LED's, Clement using for this trailer. So I have to take ordinary, round tail lights. The tailboard isn't yet ready. Martin
