This a truck that my Dad owned. 1937 Chevrolet. Had a tag axle and he built the van with the sleeper above the cab. He hauled potatoes from Buhl, Idaho to San Francisco and canned goods back. I have no idea what engine or transmission. This was when the trucks were made out of steel and so were the drivers.
Trucks I drove way back when...
1957 KW in 1958. Wagner Transportation, Twin Falls, Idaho Cummins 200 (a real smoker) with double disk fuel pump. Had to feed it fuel all the time when going down hill or it would burn up the pump. That's when I learned how to brake with my left foot. Transmissions 4 speed main and 4 way Brownie (Brownlipe). The Brownie had deep under for backing but deep under was not used on the highway. If you tried to use it the chances were that the box would blow up because it was so low geared. Hauled cattle from Idaho to California, wash out, then produce back to Idaho.
1958 Mack in 1958. Hunter Produce, Twin Falls, Idaho. Model B73. This was one rough riding truck. Cummins 220 (now have PT fuel pumps) Mack 2 stick TriPlex transmission. Lots of shifting with a 220. 35' Trailmobile trailer w/Tansicold belly mount reefer unit. Hauled dry beans and potatoes from Idaho to Los Angeles then produce back to Twin Falls. Gross weight then was 73,280 pounds or 32,000 pounds max per dual axle and 9280 on the steering axle.
This is the one in my avatar. 1960 KW. Don Hulme, Hagerman, Idaho. Cummins 262 with a T530 turbo (a real whistler). Transmissions 5 speed main 3 way Brownie. Spent a lot of time keeping the chrome polished. Even the dash insert was chrome. 35' Trailmobile w/Thermo King unit. Large doors on front of trailer were for loading 300 pound blocks of ice to help refigerate the produce. It had fiberglass fenders but a metal butterfly hood.
1965 IHC. Oppel Harvester, Boise, Idaho. Oppel made sugar beet and potao harvesters for Allis Chalmers. Cummins 335. 5 speed main transmission with 2 speed axle. Really not a bad combo. First truck I drove with a/c. 35' Fruehauf with a 24" pin. Hauled machinery out of Boise, Idaho nationwide and Canada and machinery parts back to Boise.
1972 KW. N.A.C.A. Ontario, Oregon. 1692 Cat and 13 speed transmission. Hauled frozen potatoes (french fries etc.) out of Ontario to the lower 48. 40' Utility trailer. Refrigerated by liquid nitrogen. Hauled a lot of Cummins and Cat engines and Rockwell rear ends from the Midwest to the Peterbilt plant in Newark, California. Other than that it was anything we could close the trailer doors on.
I will add more another time.
