I am employed as a project manager for an environmental company located outside Pittsburgh Pa. we respond to a lot of different types of emergencies. A lot of them are truck wrecks. This one occurred this morning on the Pa turnpike at the 71.5 mm. The truck was out of Akron Ohio, No one witnessed this one happen, it was discovered by a passing motorist reporting a tree into the west bound lane about 4 am. maintence workers arrived and found the tree into the lane and heard rustling in the tree only to find the driver crawling up the embankment semi coherent. He was very lucky to have made it out of this. They Life Flighted him no further word- No others riders. The trip off the road caused him to make contact with the tree you see laying in front of the cab The engine and front axle was completly removed from the frame The tree was moved a good 50 feet

That is his load. At Fikes, that is one pf the safety photos they show to prove that you don't have to hit anything for your load to come forward.

By the way, my earlier response was to the European cabover with the pole that came through the windshield. At Fikes Truck Line, where I'm leased, this, and several pix like it, are shown during orientation. One of our trucks is on the photos. It's a dark red T800 where the driver hit his brakes hard and a coil came forward. The headache rack did its job, but the sleeper was cruched, he survived thankfully.

Is this a new way for truckers to bury their heads in the sand?

Some wild pictures in that link. Some funny, some rediculous, some that would get you busted for profanity, and some just plain idiots. The guy sitting under the pickup and welding with the truck proped up by what looks like 2x4s, well he's not the brightest bulb on the tree.
