2008 IPMS/Region 5 Convention Story This was not the first contest to be snubbed by the automotive modelers, and it won’t be the last. There would have been only a total of six car models across all the automotive categories, but Kevin Iutzeler of IPMS/Hawkeyes came to the rescue at the last minute with a seventh! Seeing the six models on the tables, Kevin bought an AMT 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am kit, glue, and a spray can of paint from a vendor just two hours before registration closed. Sitting in the lobby by the registration table, Kevin twisted the parts off the trees, skipped fixing any mold marks or flash or runner residue, slapped on the glue to the parts, shot the body only with the spray bomb, and drew on the crude markings of Kevin’s Taxi Service with a black marking pen. With a couple of minutes to spare, Kevin’s taxi was entered into the Commercial Vehicle category. As the only entrant in that category, he received a first place trophy. Kevin’s point was that any piece of work, no matter how awful, can win an award, even a first place award, when nobody cares to enter a better model against it. Where were the comercial modelers?
This was also taken from the IPMS Will-Cook news letter

It's truly a sad day when someone can do something like that, but it is a good point proven. I know around these parts the automotive modelers are also snubbed at IPMS events. If you don't build military or aircraft around here, then you're pretty much mud and are treated as such. I know it's not like that in all IPMS chapters, but it is true around these parts, hence one reason why I haven't joined the association. If I built more military or aircraft then I might consider it, but even the military and aircraft modelers get nit-picked to death around here. Maybe over time the automotive sector will garner more respect at IPMS meets....time will tell...

First off, IPMS (and all contests) need to drop the blanket "commercial" models. They insist on lumping a class 4 and 5 pick-up based vehicle and taxi-cabs with class 7 and 8 heavy trucks. They also will place emergency vehicles (including police cars) in "commercial vehicles."
The categories need to be broken down better - such as by the actual class the vehicles are rated - the class 1-8 based on GVWR. (a Kenworth W900, Pete 379, Mack Granite are examples of Class 8, Pete 340/335, KW T300/T450 are Class 7, Ford C600 would be Class 7 or even a Class 6. Keep Taxi's and emergency equipment in their respective classes.
Just my 2 cents worth.

i guess where i am we are lucky in that respect,we have a few good shows each year and 90%of the content is cars and trucks, one is even a truck only show and there is consistanrly good numbers of truck models on the tables(250-300) another one is the state nnl, which also brings out the automotive modellers in force, very few military or aircraft.vessel/ship models come, there is classes for these each and every year but only a handful of entries, last year modelart australia magazine did an article on the show and even commented themselves on how many truck modellers attended i have some pics i have taken at these shows over the years and i can post a link to them if anyone would like,
