I recently heard that the food shortage this summer is being blamed on the bio-fuel industry and their ise of cash crops like corn & soy beans for research into bio-fuels. Has anyone out there used that bio-diesel? I wonder how the research into hydrogen fuel cells is going? I remember about 4 or 5 years ago when I started to hear about how much bio fuel would help everyone from farmers to truckers to, well, the entire country. It's one of those things that we can feel good about doing, so the repurcussions never cross our minds. I know I only thought good things would come, but hearing the end results over time, I realize it's a mistake. It's not that I was a big advocate for the bio diesel to the point that it's all I bought, but I thought, "Hey, this might work if given a chance." I'm seeing now it wasn't the best of ideas.

I do agree with you, but a large number of the drivers who aren't participating are company drivers. Since, they don't own the trucks or pay for the fuel, they think they're immune. Right now, they think it won't affect them, but it will in some way, eventually. They just don't have to hunt for fuel like an O/O does. Linehaul drivers go from terminal to terminal, where the fuel flows like wine. However, the fuel increases have affected the bigger companies. Yellow Freight has about 4,000 people laid off system wide. Well, I'm thankful my post wasn't seen as being against company drivers, as I was one myself for 6 years. One thing I never want to be is the guy that thinks he's better than a company driver. I just wanted to point out that we are all affected by this. It's just that those of us who are owner operators will feel the pain sooner, perhaps. But, I've worked for two carriers who will micro-manage you to the point where it drives you insane, just to save a penny. One example that happened to me early in my career: My boss was pretty particular about wanting us to buy most of our fuel in Ohio. We only ran the Northeast/midwest anyway, and based in NW Ohio. Sometimes, however, I would have to buy fuel in PA. I was supposed to be only buying 50 gallons in PA, enough to get me to Ohio. Well, after his speech, I tried that on my next round trip. I ran a lot of Ohio-NJ-back with that company. I bought 50 gallons of PA fuel. I went up a hill and she shut off, even with a 1/4 tank. As soon as he paid a tow truck $300 to pull me about as many feet, the truck was able to start again. Now, when I got Ohio, I filled it up. He got his wish, but after that, he didn't care where I bought fuel, and how much I paid for it.LOL ;D. He did have a policy that if you kept buying the high price fuel, that the difference would come out of your pay, which he never used against me for some reason. ;D ;D My point in all that babbling, is that management will make your job harder, and pose unrealistic expectations, when the times get tough. And, if that incident occurred while working for some of the other guys, I would've been charged with an incident. that can make a safety bonus magically disappear. We could only fuel at TAs, so when you limit yourself to one chain, you run that risk. There are a lot of stories like that where the driver ends up gettting his head bitten off by management while following their instructions. That, and losses in pay, are what I don't want to see happenning to company drivers.

If the Govenor of Pa., Eddie Rendell gets his way, I-80 across Pa. will become a toll road from Jersey to Ohio, also, look for the Pa Turnpike to get leased. Lease is said to be for a term of 75 YEARS! The toll collectors and maintenence workers are Teamsters. I'd like to see this one unfold, lol [/quote]
The federal government today, shot down Pennsylvania's proposal to privitize I-80 across the state. Good news!
