Depending on the diameter I think the wire from old headphones could work well. I've used excess lead from minature 12 volt bulbs (bulbs used for lighting structures on my model railroad - the "other" hobby! ) which are .030" OD and also some .040" OD wire from "scrap" phone wire.

Can't speak for certain on the Italeri brake chambers, one approach you could try is carefully cutting the part off and replacing any molded in mounting pin(s) by drilling out and replacing with with styrene rod of a suitable size (possibly .040 or 1/16" dia depending on the part)

For the loosening of glue on a mistake which is already dry, a little drop of Fingernail polish remover will loosen it up and shouldn't hurt the plastic. I use it on model cement and super glue. The remover contains acitone in small quanity and is recomemded for ungluing fingers when using super glue. I keep a bottle and some Q tips handy all the time.
This rig is shaping up real nice. I hope yopur cat isn't like mine, a truck scrapper!!!
