Ive simulated a muddy look on my international logging truck using some artist tube arcrylic paints red oxide with yellow oxide and some grey detail on the tanks it seemed to do the intended purpose for my use you could try that im sure there are other builders who might have more ideas that could help you out the red oxide looks like rust if you put real thin coats on the unit your detailing.

I've read of modelers using artist chalks for weathering. Earth tones would work best for rust colors and Gray, black, and whites for other shading and detailing. I myself have been using Bragdon Enterprises weathering powders. Here is a couple pics of an IH Transtar 4070A that I am building and weathering using the Bragdon powders and some flat clear finish. Most of the rust was just brushed on and rubbed in to acheive the desired effect. For the more heavily rusted areas I applied a little flat clear lacquer followed by the weathering powder and then another coat of clear to set the rust. What I have done here was accomplished over a 3 night period (to allow clear coat to dry) Hope this helps you out some. Any questions feel free to shoot me a message and I'll try to help you out the best I can. The biggest thing to remember is take your time.

Now that is one awesome job of detailing a weathered look. I have been building models for over 40 years and seen a lot of weather jobs, but that is one of the best.... Art ABC Specialties Resin Casting public.fotki.com/Goodguyinar416/

Hi Dave!
Well the simplest way is: Take real rust! Scratch some rust from your car (e.g. silencer), make the grains finer in a mortar; take a thin film of some dull clear laquer or paint on the place, you'll like to have the rust and sprinkle the rust dust on it. Blow away the rest of the rust powder. Let it dry. Ready is the rusty frame, cab or whatever. An other possibility is coffe powder. But it don't work as good as real rust, because it needes weeks to dry.

But you have to wash the steels wool first in a strong detergent solution to remove the cutting oils. let dry after a good rinse. The place in a container of water and let the natural oxidation process take its course. I have not however taken to the level demonstrated in the above photos . Though I fully intend to try it out And I am also looking to obtain some of the artist acrylics and oils to try. I would also like to try if I could find some. The old colored chalk board chalk. I think it could be ground up and applied dry then covered with clear flat or semi flat paint. Be Well Gator

Hi Chad, any more updates on this truck please? Rod Rod, Alas, No progress has been made on the rusted Transtar. I fell into a builders rut and just have not been able to motivate myself enough to finish it or any of the other projects I had going. One of these days I might dig it back out and continue working on it. Chad
