Hi,
I'm Jim Walden or the "oldfart". I'm 60 years old retired class A sheet metal mechanic and machinist who hasn't had time to work with models in many long years. I have made model cars and truck since I can't remember when but during the mid 1970's I fell in love with building big rigs. Work, kids, and life got into my way and I just never had time to continue on building bigger and better models. Now that I have the time I plan to get back to one of the most relaxing, enjoyable and time consuming hobbies I know, Big Rig building.
I always enjoyed putting the most detail possible into any model such as engine wiring, brake lines, working doors, steerable front wheels, in-cab detail, cloth on seat, seatbelts, real wood dash, real rubber mud guards, working front and rear lights, (wheat bulbs) etc. Back in the 1970's big rig models didn't come with working doors or steerable front wheels or much else. Supplies were limited to glue, paint, and some trim tape so I had to hand make most of the accessories I added. I could tell you a long story about the first time I tried to make a mud flap girl out of a .002 thick feeler gauge with tin snips, but I'll spare you the details. lol Anyway I understand that there is a LOT more parts out there now than way back in the day. I just have to hunt for them and learn what is available.
My first model back into the hobby will be a wrecker of some sort. I plan for all doors to open and close, full lighting, complete engine and chassis wiring, or to make it short in terms......to go full tilt with details. I just hope my hands can remain steady. lol
Well that is about all I have to tell on myself but I look to you guys and girls for guidance in getting back to my first love, Big Rig model making.
Thanks,
oldfart
PS: I added a couple of old pictures of my work back in the 70's. Its pretty lame for the work I see now days.
