Hello: I'm Jeff. Sure happy to find this forum. I do like to build trucks. I'm not a fast builder as the pic in my avatar is my current "office"...been doing that for over 20 yrs. I have a bunch of projects in the works. Hopefully I'll be inspired to complete a few. They are nothing special, just out of the box builds. Have seen some real nice builds here, and some great works in progress. I am looking forward to being an active member here.

Welcome to the Forum, Jeff. Tell us a little bit about your current office. The office is an 06 Pete. Nothing special...it has a cummins motor rated at 330 hp and a 6sp Allison auto trans. It is equipped with a McNeilus 11 yd mixer. Not a bad truck to drive, its biggest drawback is trying to make it down a long downgrade without frying the brakes....has no jake! A lot of white knuckle driving when I'm grossing 75000 lbs. Here is a bigger pic.

Nice looking Western mixer. We don't see mixers like that here on the East coast. What model Peterbilt is that?

Hi Jeff!
Welcome on the Forum! Nice, to see a truck driving mate here!
You wrote, that Your truck has no Jake? Really?! How do You stop it if the truck is full loaded? Here in Germany that woudn't be allowed! Each truck more than 7.5 tons gros weight must have a third brake (Parking brake, Footbrake, Retarder). For what it has a wheel on the rear end at the top? I think, that's spare tyre.

The axle is a hydraulically controlled unit (circled in yellow) The axles with smaller tires in front of the drive axles (circled in red) are air activated. All these axles have brakes and steer independently. Inside the cab is a plate with instructions on which axles are activated depending an the load size.....0 to 4yds,aux. axles are up. 4 to 8yds,rear aux. axle down. 8 to 11yds,all three aux. axles down. The axles are controlled in the cab. The axles are lowered before driving the truck on public roads and raised on jobsites. Hope that helps. Jake brakes are not required here. This truck weighs 32000 lbs empty. Stopping this truck is actually not too bad.......on flat ground. Mountain roads are another story...lol

Hi Jeff! I wrote wrong! I liked to write "It's NO spare tyre." Well, liftable axles are known here, too - of course. In the Netherlands, the trucks often have more axles then german trucks to reduce the single axleweight on bridges. But an axle so far behind the rear end is curious! Forerunning axles (the axles in front of the drive axles) with a smaller diameter are often seen on english trucks. Some scandinavians have them, too. The european standard for semi rigs is a two-axle tractor with a three axle trailer. Here a picture of my current truck, a Scania R 470. I drive it with drop deck trailers or curtainsiders. The crane trailer has a liftable axle (1.) and the 3. axle is steerable. The crane has it's own engine and is moveable fore- and backwards on the platform. By the way: I know Sierra Vista very well. A cousin of my mother lives there. Martin

Martin: That is a good looking rig. The crane is awesome. The reason for the rear axle being so far back is to increase the length of the truck so it will conform to the weight laws. It is great that you have relatives in Sierra Vista. That is about 75 miles to the southeast of where I am. The company that I drive for has a plant there.

Hi Jeff!
75 mi - that's not far away. Cemex is well known here, too. The bought a lot of smaller (former family run) independent concrete plants, because Cemex offered the stuff cheaper.

Hello Martin:
Maybe some day they will send me there. Sometimes we will go to plants in other cities. When I go,I work at a plant 100mi north of here. Cemex is a large company. Their home office is in Mexico.

Hi Jeff!
Yes, the cemex company is - I think - the worlds biggest concrete co.
