Hello Everyone,
I am beginning a project for my father-in-law where I am going to build a scale model of his 1987 Mack R Series Tandem Dump Truck. I managed to get pictures of every angle of the truck for reference without him knowing (it is a surprise) except for one: the engine. Does anyone know what color the engine is as well as the transmission housing, transmission, cylinder heads, rocker covers, etc? I am a veteran NASCAR Model Builder so I know what color they are on those vehicles but as a first time truck builder, I doubt that there are many aluminum parts under the hood to reduce weights and increase speed. Any help you can all provide will be appreciated!

The entire engine should be "Power gray". It is a medium dark gray, I get mine from my local Mack dealer. Duplicolor ( available at NAPA stores ) may also list Mack engine gray. The transmission should be natural aluminum. Unless it is not a Mack transmission. Make sure you use the correct transmission, Mixitorque transmissions are triple counter shaft ( v shaped ). The single counter shaft trans. in the DM 600 kit is wrong, the DM 800 kit contains the correct one. Your engine should be an E6 2V with a tip turbine. If it does not have an intercooler in front of the radiator, the engine in the Cruseliner is real close. The engine included in the R model kit is incorrect for a tip turbine engine but would work for a truck with a chassis mounted charge air cooler. Trucks with tip turbine engines have two pipes coming out of the air cleaner, one going to what looks like a second turbocharger blowing into a large box on the intake and one going to the turbo. inlet. I should have some pictures, if you need them e mail me. Hope that helps

dominickpicca, Sourkraut, would be correct on using Mack power gray for the engine..it would fit that period. I bought a spray can at my local Mack dealer for under 10.00. My suggestion to you would be keep it simple and maybe add some weathering. Here is a picture of the engine I did for my Mack project before the added detailing and decals...Good Luck Kurt McLucas
