8-)Here is one that I've been toying with when I need a break from other projects. I startesd it last summer, and here's where I am now. It's the Clint Freeman Components 358 conversion . I'm mounting it to an AMT Pete 359 California Hauler chassis. That's where the sleeper came from. Since AMT didn't hinge the hoods on the original California Haulers , I'm doing that myself, which is a little harder than I thought . I bought this off of ebay, but the modified front spring hangers that should be with the kit are missing, so I'm having to improvise with hinging. I have to find a way to make it tilt without the fenders hanging up on the bumper . With the narrow nose, I doubt it was meant for the 8V 71 in the 359 kit, as it may be too wide an engine, so this one will have Cummins power. Enjoy the pix. Face to face The 358 is a needlenose with a tilting hood, instead of a butterfly hood like the 351. I would like to especially like to thank Mr Red Oval himself, Tim Ahlborn for all his help with this project as he answered my many questions.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm kicking around the idea of going with a 1674 CAT, but not sure how to go about making that engine. Backdate the 3406 maybe? Not sure. Only time will tell.

The 8v71 barely fit in a 358. The 359 was developed for those 'bigger' engines and more cooling that they needed. You are on the right track with an in-line Cummins. If you go with a turbocharged version, you might have a clearance issue with the turbo and the side of the hood.

I still have that pic you sent of a 1674 CAT in a 358(which inspired me to think about modifying a 3406 into one for this project), and even it looked like it was "shoe-horned" in there.
