The tank could be for Air if the truck had an air starter

Maybe an auxiliary cooling system for the radiator? I almost bought a 1961 Chrysler Imperial many years ago. The car had a large water tank in the trunk that would spray water onto the radiator if it started to get too hot. Part of some towing package auxiliary cooling system. Looking at the pics of those trucks, they look equipped for heavy haul, so that kind of system may have been beneficial for that.

I'm not a driver or any kind of an expert but.... I've never seen the axles spread on the truck before as a couple of these pics show. Can they handle more weight? Ride better? Seems like the forward axle would have the tires ground up when cornering.... Bruce

The tank could be for Air if the truck had an air starter ALSO air starts have a very distinctive sound when starting it rates right up there with the jake brake

It is an Air tank for the air start BUT some Whites, Brockways and Macks also ran Air assist steering. Paul

The spread tandems can carry more weight according to Canadian law.I don't know what a standard tandem spacing is,but I know a spread is 60 and 72 inch.I'd say the ones showen are 72 inch.
