Ok Guys I dont know what happened. I was painting the cab pieces to my current project and when I masked it off to do the two tone. somethin went haywire cause when I pulled tape it pulled most of the cured paint with it. Prep was like all others cleaned then primered, dry time then paint, more dry time then the two tone color. Equaled missing paint. Dry time averaged 2 days both times. krylon out of the can is the paint. Any help is appreciated.

Bronccowboy Sounds like after you painted your parts, you left your tape on while the paint dried. If this is the case, the paint sealed the edges of the tape to the plastic, and when you peeled the tape off it took the paint right with it. When I paint a 2 tone or have to tape off a project, I try to remove the tape as soon as I am done painting the project, while the paint is still wet. I try to pull the tape off at an angle away from the wet, damp paint. This way the paint don't seal the tape to the project. If you can't or don't want to do this for fear of handling the wet paint, wait till it dries and than take your hobby knife with a sharp blade, and or razor blade and lightly follow the tape line. doing this very lightly around the tape will separate the tape from the dried paint. You stated that you use Krylon out of the rattle can, this is a very fast drying paint, and will seal that tape down very fast, it is best to pull that tape off right after you are done spraying your project. With Krylon you have a less than 10 minute window to get this done. Hope this will help you with your next 2 tone paint project. Jeff

Darn Bronccowboy, I've never had that happen, that the first color came off with the tape. really don't know what would cause that. Did just the color paint come off or did the primer coat come off also Don't know what you use for primer, but it might have reacted to the color paint and they just didn't stay together. After I get all of my body work done. I will put on a very thin coat of primer to make sure that all the body work is good to go. Than I will take some very fine steel wool ( # 0000 ) and go over the whole car/truck and than wash it in just plain water and let dry for a day or so. The only primer that I use is Dupli-Color white or grey sandable primer. I have never had any trouble with these primers as they are compatable with pretty much any paint out there today. I put on a coat of primer, wait 15 to 20 minutes and than put on my first color coat, after about 20 minutes I check that and if it needs a second coat I put it on. Than I'll wait 2 or 3 days for that to dry. After the wait time, this will sound funny but I give it the sniff test, if it still smells like paint I will give it a few more days to gas out. When it don't smell like raw paint, that's when I go ahead and do the tape thing and start my second color. I will use the steel wool on the first color, before I tape it off. this will make it smooth but also give it a surface that the second color can get a grip on. Also I only use Tamiya tape and it seems to come off of the smooth surface without a problem. After every thing is good and gassed out I will go ahead and do the steel wool thing again and than go ahead and clear the whole project. Also the only clear I use is Dupli-Color clear, as it seems to be compatable with most color paints also. That's how I go about it and like I say I have never had that problem with the under coat (first color) come off with the tape. I by far am no expert, and I don't build show models, but I have been through paint problems a few times, and I know that it is a pain when a nice paint job goes south on you. Hope this helps you Jeff

Thanks jeff. I dothe sniff test too. lol I use rustolem automotive primer usually grey or white i usually dont have a problem bc I spray automotive paint over it. This project Im doing for my wife and its two tone pink. prolly wont use a whole lot of that so i just went rattle can route and its bittin me back pretty good.
I use the 3M tape bc i use automotive paint. this time i used some cheap masking tape bc its less sticky idk. ill try to fix it and get pics of this project well under construction in a wip.
