Hello,
I need some advice from builders familiar with this segment of the hobby. I want to build my father-in-law a scale model of his 1987 Mack R Series Tandem Dump Truck for Christmas. I don't know where to start. Can anyone suggest the kits that I will need to purchase to start this project? I was looking at the Model King Mack Tractor combined with the Autocar Dump Truck. Please let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree. I have experience with models as I have been building NASCAR Models for 16 years so I can handle a challenge. Thanks in advance.

Dominick I would be more than happy to help you in this one..as I consider myself an expert in "dump" building, especially in Mack's... I did a single axle R-Model not too long ago..I have nearly a year build tiime into it, "tons" of details. 1st..you will need to try to acquire the AMT/Matchbox R-Model..kit to represent a 1987 model..mine was a 83..not much difference..Ebay is your best bet..be prepared to shell out some bucks..this will give you the tandem axles as you desire..And then you want to acquire the Autocar Dump Truck or the Ford Louisville Dump Truck as well..both dump bodies will work with some modifications... I actually have 2 R-model kits in mine, and 1 Autocar Dump, "body" heavy modified..and a Ford Louisville Shorthauler..Your time frame to present this gift to your father-in-law..for Christmas might be a tall order..It took me at least 2 months to obtain the parts I wanted to use/incorporate. Get lots of detail pictures if you can..search the internet, and great forums such as this one..Alot of good people here...Good luck in your build..sorry to ramble on... Kurt McLucas

Thanks for the information. I took your suggestion and went to Ebay and sure enough, there happened to be an AMT Kit of a Mack R685ST. I put in a generous bid and will continue to do what I need to to get the kit.
