I am finishing up a newly reissused Revell Pete snap togethor. I did this mainly to finish something! I painted the engine Machine Grey, just because I had it. If I were concerned what color should have it been or is the grey ok? I think I may build another now that I know how it goes togethor. I also have most of the other reissued truck kits too. Id like to know what color the engines in these kits should be and where I might find the correct color. My local NAPA had the Machine Grey and Cummins Beige. AMT Pete 352 Cabover AMT White Freightliner AMT GMC Astro Have you guys thought about a guide to painting big rig models? Ya know list the kit and what engines are in them and what color they might be?

I don't have those kits so I can't help you as far as engine brands for each kit but I can tell you what to get for each brand.
Cummins Beige - Duplicolor #233 Detroit Green - Duplicolor #224 Cat Yellow (the engine in the snap Pete) - Duplicolor #1356 Some early Petes like the Snap Pete and probably the 352, had white engines someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
Hope this helps. Engine color is a topic that is pretty popular and I'm sure some forum members will give you more help.
So your grey engine could be seen as a well worn and dirty white engine and that could be accurate! besides...if you like it...just do it.

The Peterbilt 352 Has a Detroit Diesel Should be Detroit Green. The GMC also has a Detroit engine. The engine in the Snap Pete could be a cummins or a Cat. If its a Cat then Yellow. if its a Cummins Beige, White, or a grey. I've seen Cummins engines painted the three listed also black, red, and gold.

Their probably are no equivalent colors in any brand of model paints, I purchase the real thing from my local NAPA store they carry Duplicolor ( less than $5.00 a can and a can lasts forever ). Mack Power Gray, Mack gold and International Blue I purchased from my local dealers. Remember that all the engines in the Ford kits are Ford blue, yes the 3208 Cat. in the LN 8000 was painted Ford blue! If you are doing a Ford with a Cat. reman. engine it will be cat. yellow. Black Cummins engines started with the N14, M11, L10 and the B series. Red Cummins engines are the ISX series, the 855 series engines were not painted red or black. PACCAR did paint their engines white somewhere around the '70s. Early Cummins NHS, NHRS etc. were a gold color. When painting a diesel engine remember that these engines are painted fully assembled. The manufacturer paints everything, hoses, brackets, exhaust, sometimes even the belts that are not installed by the truck manufacturer.

One more quick thought, if you are having a hard time locating the correct colors at a parts house. Try a local engine re builder, we have a source for engine paints ( I also have custom color formulas in Sikkens to use on high end engines ) Hope this helps.

Ok, here's the list. Peterbilt: All engines regardless of make before 1985-white International: All engines until the early 80s-red Kenworth: all engines up until the late 70s-white, and sometimes red Mack: Gold until mid/late 70s-gold, then they became grey All others used the engine mfg paint Detroit Diesel: green, honestly it's like a puke green until the 60 series, then it's like a greenish gray Cummins: Beige until the N14. Those are black, many had red valve covers. ISX and signature-red Cat: yellow except for the ones used by Ford in eraly 70s, those are Ford blue.
I hope this helps. If any corrections need to be made, dont hesitate, this is to help, and I want to give the right info.

I dont know when International went to blue, but in the 1970s they used red, or the mfg color. Not sure how long kw used red, but it was in the 70s. These are colors I have seen in person, and after gathering info from people over the years.
