Question for all of you have some CAT knowledge. I don't know of anyone who makes the 1674 CAT which is the CAT of the 1960's/1970's, but can a 3406 be converted/backdated into a 1674? I thought about maybe installing one in my Pete 358. I have a left side view of it in a 358, but I'm not as familiar with the Caterpillar engines as I am Cummins . Any help would be great. Here is a pic of a 1674 in a 1972 Pete 358. Thanks in advance.

Man, that's a toughy. I drove a 1692 in the late '60's and early '70's and as I remember the fuel pump was on the right side and it had throttle linkage from the foot feed along the left side of the engine, across the front, then back to the pump. I drove a 3406 in '75/76 and believe the fuel pump was on the left with a primer pump on the back side of the fuel pump. How this would compare to the 1674 I couldn't tell you. The biggest problem I have is "old timers disease" 'cause that was a long time ago. I do know that the 1692 was one hell of an engine as was the Cummins 335. Wish I could help you more and good luck on the conversion. Win

check out this link for some reference on the 1674, photos show both sides of engine. www.scrutonmarine.com/E2061.htmGC BTW I think a person could rework a kit Cummins to resemble a 1674?
