What do the letters and numbers stand for, such as 8V71 or 6V92TTA?I know a 6 or 8 is number of cylinders.A list of different models would be appreciated. My dad and all his friends all had cummins and hated detroits,so I don't know anything about them other than they user lots of oil.

This is pretty straight forward, 8= number of cylinders, v=cylinder configuration, 53,71,92,149=cubic inches per cylinder, t=turbocharged,tt=double turbos,a=aftercooled. Then you have the series engines from series 40,50,60 which are inline 4 stroke engines. by the way a inline two stroke would be a 6-71. hope that helps. mikey
