Hey guys, I know it's been alittle while but with the job loss and life, it's been kinda stressful but I have got a couple of pics for you and I have very little left on the body to finish but I am waiting on stock for the boom. I have the bottom section that connects to the machine but need some angel to finish it up or continue. But I will update you again soon as I now have some time to put on it. Thanks for looking

Kerry, That is looking really good. Now did you make the wedge sockets that end the cable and attach to the gantry?

Kerry, Both , either or? I have a couple of ideas on how to do them. But haven't tried them yet. So if you have a source for them I would really like to know. or how you did them , yourself!

Gator, I did make them and here is how I did it. I used Evergreen #226 3/16 tube and Plastruct 1/8 3.2mm tubing. I slid about a 3/16 piece of the 1/8th tubing into about a 1/2 inch long piece of the 3/16 tube, keeping it to one end with maybe a 32nd hanging out. After it set, I chucked the open end into my drill and with a file, I spun the piece in the drill and tapered it. When finished I simply cut the now cone to lenght (at the end of the inside 1/8 piece) Then I took piece of Evergreen 8410 ( HO scale 4x10) and after rounding over the ends, drilled a pilot hole in both ends and followed with a bigger bit to the size I needed. Cut the two ends off making sure of the lenght and glued them into place using the intended pin as a guide. Afterwards I took the intended twine and tied a really hard knot and trimed the excess. Threaded it through the wedge socket and notice the knot disappears. There's one wedge socket. I know that this is maybe overkill or maybe not but I hope you understand and it helps. But the one thing that puzzles me is the routing of the lines from the two small drums in the back of the cabin to the boom. I know that they go to another set of sheaves before the boom but where and how do they attach? The end of the line is somewhere in there I think. Any help with that would be great. Thanks again guys Kerry

Kerry, That was the answer I was looking for. And kinda the same idea that I have on how to do them. AS for the routing of the boom cable. I believe this model Manitowoc used a double drum hoist. Starting with the right side drum. the cable goes out to the bridle( the part that hold the boom pendants). then comes back to the gantry and back and forth like that until you have it reeved and the end of the cable is at the other drum . If you pull the bridle out to the end of the heel section of boom, secure the bridle. Then go back to the right side drum and secure the cable end to the drum. Usually there is a hole in the sidewall of the drum and the cable goes thru that to a lock down block. Now take up the slack by pulling the cable to the left side drum. Hopefully you can turn the drums. take up a couple wraps on the right side drum a,d then do the same on the other side. What you want is for both drums to have a couple of wraps of cable on the drum and the rest is rigged out in the sheaves and gantry. I hope that description is not to confusing. If anyone can help explain it . Please jump in. Be Well Gator

Kerry, I just realized, That the sockets you made are not wedge sockets. They are the ones that are made in rigging shops using lead. The wedge socket is used on the dead end of the hoist cables , and are used to attach the headache ball or other implements. The advantage of the wedge socket is that the cable can be pushed out of it to allow multiple reeving, it is then put back on to attach to the boom tip or the block. A variation of your technique may work to make the wedge sockets.

Gator, I understand what your saying. They are what was on the host machine so I went with it. Did you get my mail to you? I need to know on the boom? I got my plastic in today and need to get started on it. Just want to make sure I'm building it right. Kerry

This is coming along fantastically. I like your method of securing the string--cable-- off in those cones. One thing I like to do when tieing a knot like that, at the very end of the line, is to put a little superglue on it to assure it will never untie. That counterweight looks awesome too. Dan

thanks Dan, I did use some glue on the knots but it wasn't super glue but I hope it will do the same thing. Currently I'm waiting on plastic to finish my boom. Man this thing really uses alot of stock...lol and I almost forgot the side step part on the operators side. Kerry
