With both beer hauling Pete tractors complete or very nearly so, switching to trailer mode. Italeri's 48' van being used for basis of Labatt's 4 axle unit, basic box was assembled with extra interior bracing cut from .080 styrene sheet. Then sides smoothed off with belt sander (really!) for .020 styrene overlay cut from large sheets, 12" x 24" from Evergreen, so sides are one continuous piece. No more wretched seam from the 2 piece side panels! Frame is from Italeri's container trailer, spring ride suspension is close to correct 72" spread (it scales out a few inches longer) to use without modification. Frame had to be extended to carry two air lift axles, .030 flanges and .040 web made from styrene to match kit part. Frame rail height is taller than 12" typically found under these trailers, this worked out well as trailer is too low to begin with. Styrene sheet laminated to build up fifth wheel area until trailer sat level when hitched to Pete 378. New side panels made deeper than kit sides to cover this extra material. Floor ends up higher than on 1:1 trailer, as this is only obvious when looking underneath it is a compromise I can live with. 1/43 scale Coors trailer is simpler, again basic box assembled with extra interior bracing. Nose sanded smooth and recessed areas filled in. Styrene .040 half round used to add horizontal ribs, these actually weren't that bad to install. Entire side done in one sitting, biggest "problem" is it uses up a lot of strips so stock on hand is now used up! Front of rib started at join between nose and side panel, at back left extra long to be trimmed once cement cures thoroughly.

Yes, the wretched seam of the two side panels of the Italeri Van is down fall! It's a good idea, to make the sides complete new.
A nice solution also are the half round stripes on the other van!

No belt sander today......."it's a small world after all"! 1/43 trailer has been the focus, HO scale hinge assortment provided suitable hinges for rear doors, rings made from .010 styrene where tail lights will go. Wheels modified to 5 hole aluminum same as tractor, still need to pick out lug nuts and hub with paint. Suspension modified from kit slider to fixed unit as 1:1 photo shows spare tire rack just ahead of tandem. Landing gear modified with shoes in place of kit's wheels.

Some progress on the 1/24 one, styrene strip & shapes used to build up rear frame area. Reference photos of a 1:1 Labatt's van have been very helpful. Nose cone faired in with Tamiya putty. Credit where it is due for FRP texture, I saw a post on one of the model truck groups about using a small roller to give textured surface to simulate FRP panel, it shows up well in this photo.

On all it's "feet" for the first time. Both lift axles being modelled in the raised position, looks more interesting to me that way and if I pose the rig going around a corner as shown here they would be raised to prevent tires scrubbing sideways. Some of the underbody detailing in place, more still to add. Lift axles, backing plates and slack adjusters all from Plaskit. I will be using his 6 spoke wheels as well, just don't have them yet.

How many tons may the four-axle trailer carry?

I don't know if Daniel still makes the nose cones, I bought this one at the Toronto model car show a couple years ago. Will ask when I am in touch with him next (order in progress for wheels to go under this trailer among other things). I believe the payload permitted on a 4 axle like this in Ontario is 80,000 #. As to how many bottles of beer that is I don't know - other than "lots"!

Heavy enough to need substantial landing gear though, black pieces are from the Italeri trailer kit, gearbox is AMT part, rest scratchbuilt. Again "best guess" for design/size working from reference photos of trailers. Closer view of lift axles, boxes which would contain valve, gauge etc. for each axle are from the parts box, they are main body of Farr air cleaner AMT puts in their Road Boss kit. Spring ride suspension is mostly stock Italeri, hollow back of equalizer bars filled in.

Hi Ray, update on trailer nose cones: Daniel does still make them "on request", I will be ordering some, would you like some made as well?

A holdup on the 1/43 trailer, .040 half round, has been solved with recent hobby shop visit. So next stop for this one will be paint booth for silver. Kit reefer unit narrowed slightly and piece of Plano mesh used for grille. .020 brass wire ladder made for access to one side, other uses HO scale hinges to simulate kick down steps.

Any day a Plaskit order arrives is a good day! 6 spoke wheels with proper oil hubs can go on now. .020 brass wire valve stems added. Spare tire holder made from 1/4" styrene channel, rim is two Italeri outer rings glued together to make open spoke wheel rim. And in the "just about complete" category, decals made for Coors trailer. Corrugated sides are bad enough for trying to decal over, then I went and added ribs as well....... Decals have been a struggle, they do look OK from a distance.
