The other Pete cpb project currently on the go is a 378 from Labatt's breweries fleet, starting with Italeri's 378 kit (photo of 1:1 truck from Gary Morton's collection on Hank's Truck Pictures) With components in different locations than stock kit, all holes in frame plugged: 377 cab sides used as truck being modelled didn't have external air cleaners: Brass mesh replaced molded screen on intake openings: Mocked up, 72" drive axle spread:

Thanks! Front wheels on this one needed extended chrome nut covers made from 1/16 styrene hex rod (thanks Ray aka R766ST) along with chrome centre cap, metal thumbtack was right size & contour. Valve stem is .020 brass wire.

Rear wheels get a bit different treatment than fronts, nut covers are easier to make as they are just the the regular length ones. 1/16 hex rod again used to make these, molded on wheel nuts ground off. Hub reworked for proper depth and fastener detail sanded off to simulate chrome "top hat" covers. Valve stems again .020 brass wire, holes opened up to 1/8" dia to give wheel proper Alcoa appearance. Reworked & stock wheel shown for comparison: Fuel tank is stock kit part with all molded on detail sanded smooth. Thanks again to R766ST for a pair of RoG fuel tank steps. Welded on pads for fuel cap & tank fittings made from styrene sheet, free standing straps will be made for installation after painting:

I haven't been there so can't speak from experience however I am guessing the Italian Autostrada must be truly open road as there are no brake drums in the Italeri kit! ! As they are really not visible I thought about leaving them off but the idea of 80,000# payload and no brakes is too terrifying to contemplate, even if it is "only" 1/24 scale. Front drums from parts box, IIRC AMT Mack R, raided a K123 parts kit for the back ones. Centres drilled out to fit over Italeri wheels, solvent cement and stippling with old brush for cast texture. Model Master burnt sienna first coat followed with roof brown (Badger Modelflex) for cast iron that has seen some heating/cooling and road salt.

Nice details all over. I also do not like the absence of the brake drums of Italeri kits. I like yours. Great job so far. Jarda

Thanks Jarda! Battery box scratchbuilt, .020 styrene for main body of box and .010 brass for lid. Air tanks are 378 kit parts. Batteries themselves raided from the "stash", Mack Cruiseliner parts kit:

Great work, giving Jarda a run for it. May I suggest the batteries from the Paystar kit. Steve

Thanks Steve, will check the "stash" for a Paystar kit. On the topic of using parts from other kits, in addition to wheels I have raided other parts from Italeri's "US Wrecker Truck" Ford LTL9000 kit, rear driveshaft for one. It was molded with half the yokes open, other ones drilled & carved out. 72" axle spread required lengthening, aluminum tube used here. This also makes it easier to fit into place as altered driveshaft can telescope like a real one. Engine fitted in place, brass wire use for freestanding oil fill pipe & dipstick. Rad also test fitted.

Been working on opposite end of frame recently, Fontaine fifth wheel from Mack DM series kit, mounting plate made from styrene strip as kit one was too narrow for frame. Box at right side of photo is Webasto engine heater.

One interesting detail to fabricate is the mud flap hangers. K&S 1/32 square brass bar used, it was annealed (heat red hot & let cool on its own) to make it easier to wrap around into coil shape. Piece of 3/32" brass tube used to form coils, mounting bracket on frame is .060 x .060 styrene strip with .040 dia. hole drilled through - so in this case a square peg does fit in a round hole.

Frame's next stop is paint booth, some of the items here will be removed prior to blue paint such as pogo stick, walkway grating and crossbar for half fenders. Brass strip used for half fender rear supports to give them some strength. Fifth wheel ramps made up from styrene strip & angle. Front wheel, Alclad chrome with Tamiya clear orange for reflectors on lug nut covers. Wiring/hoses left extra long on frame for fitting to cab at final assembly.

Was able to paint this evening so now "no touch" rule is in effect for the week, cab & engine still have plenty of work to be done while frame cures.
